The Lakehead Thunderwolves pushed the Ottawa Gee Gees to five sets on Friday night, but couldn't pull the trigger in the end.

The Wolves, who wrap up their season against Ottawa on Saturday, fell 3-2 in this one, losing the first two sets 25-18 before rallying with 25-19 and 25-20 wins to tie the contest.

The lost the deciding fifth game 15-9.

LU seemed slow-footed to begin the match, but eventually got themselves back into the game with tough serving, plenty of hustle plays and some swift handy work at the net by Lakehead middle Karla Brayshaw, who finished with 3 solo blocks, one block assist and plenty of timely tips around unsuspecting Gee Gees. Brayshaw also had 5 kills.

As always, Lakehead had their all-star hitter Vanessa Chorkawy shoulder much of the offensive load, as she scored 24 points (all kills), and Jorie Daymond and Kim Dyck had strong serving games, with six and four services aces, respectively.

Furthermore to LU's defense, current CIS leading digger Nicole Vercaigne had eight digs, as did Claire Morrison.

For Ottawa, Laura Carmanico had 15 points (12 kills, three service aces) as did Myriam English (13 kills, one ace, one block).

Carmanico also had 11 digs.

LU Coach Chris Green drew the positives from the match, and is confident going into tomorrow's match:

"It was a positive process tonight. We fought. We thought. We hustled. We will learn from this and continue to grow as a team. I look forward to tomorrow's task."

This match was the first of three for Lakehead this weekend. They resume play tomorrow at 6 p.m. verus Ottawa in their final season game and take to the floor Sunday for an exhibition match versus Team Canada at 1:30 p.m..
