WBB: Slow start costly as Wolves swept by Guelph

THUNDER BAY - An early deficit was too much for the Lakehead Thunderwolves to overcome for the second straight night.

THUNDER BAY - An early deficit was too much for the Lakehead Thunderwolves to overcome for the second straight night.

The Thunderwolves only mustered seven first-quarter points as the Guelph Gryphons completed the weekend sweep with a 78-57 victory over Lakehead in OUA women's basketball regular season play at the Thunderdome on Saturday.

The home side was down eight after the first quarter with Guelph taking a 33-23 lead into the halftime recess.

The Gryphons gradually expanded the lead as the game went on, never giving Lakehead a chance to get back in it.

Cassandra Soulias was the leading Lakehead scorer with 12 points off the bench while Gillian Lavoie chipped in 11 as the only two Thunderwolves to hit double digits.

The Guelph offence was led by Dana Van Bolkom who had a game-high 18 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

The Thunderwolves host the Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton Ravens next weekend.
