Bridget O’Reilly and Gillian Lavoie led the Lakehead Thunderwolves to victory in Winnipeg on Friday night.
O’Reilly scored a team-high 16 points and Lavoie hauled in 13 boards as the Wolves downed the Winnipeg Wesmen 61-47 to open the Shoot for the Cure tournament.
Jerika Baldin was also strong for LU, scoring eight points to go with five assists and five rebounds.
"We played very well for 35 minutes," said coach Jon Kreiner in a release.
"I was happy with our first half execution ad defense. Winnipeg's second half zone caused us some difficulties but we stayed strong on D. Gillian pulled down a lot of boards for us and Jerika had her best to date as a Thunderwolf."
Katelyn Zen added 11 for Lakehead, who limited Winnipeg’s top scorer Megan Noonan to just six points.
Renetha Burton topped all Wesmen players with a dozen points and nine rebounds.
"As a young team we need to learn how to close games and I don't think we made great decisions down the stretch. Good defense will guard against that some times, but we still need to improve our end of game management,” Kreiner added.
