THUNDER BAY -- The Westfort Maroons team became this year’s Neebing Classic Atom A tournament Champions.
The Neebing Minor Hockey Association-run tournament was played last weekend. Age groups covered Novice seven through Atom 11-year-olds, in both single and double A divisions. The Maroons came up trumps after a grueling three-game schedule Saturday put them into the semifinals and eventual winners over the KC Devils. The event saw many tight battles, within city league teams. It proved to be a surprising and varied affair with League favourite’s succumbing to inform teams listed lower on the regular season points table.
Games were tight and embattled with small goals differences which provided the crowds of parent’s supporters and onlookers with much to cheer about and offer encouragement.
Championship games ended with the following results:
Novice A Neebing Jr. Thunderwolves clipped the Wildhawks with a win 4-2
Novice B showdown had the Elks Mallons Penguins pinning back the Elks Power Skating Flyers in a 2-1 score.
Atom A Division The Westfort Dougallmedia OPG Maroons bested the KC Devils 3-2 in their final game.
While in the Atom AA competition saw the KC Sabers cutting down Westfort Rangers 4-1. The Sabers AA team have now gone on to win 3 of their last 4 tournaments.
