THUNDER BAY -- The Westgate Tigers senior boys volleyball team were crowned NWOSSA champions in Kenora on Friday evening.
The Tigers were coming off an undefeated SSSAA season (12-0), a SSSAA Championship, as well as four tournament gold medals, before having to face the Beaver Brae Broncos for the NWOSSA Championship.
Game 1 was set for 2 p.m. Friday. The Tigers stormed out of the gates to a 25-17 first set victory in front of a loud, packed, Beaver Brae gym.
The second set saw the Broncos bounce back with a 25-21 before the Tigers captured the third 25-22.
Looking to close out the match in the 4th, the Tigers came up short losing 26-24. Not to be denied in the 5th set, the Tigers made quick work of the Broncos, winning 15-6 and taking a 1-0 series lead.
It was a quick turnaround before game 2 at 7 p.m. After reviewing some video, the Tigers made some adjustments both offensively and defensively.
The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, prompting a Broncos' timeout and quieting the packed gym.
The timeout didn't help and the Tigers ran the score to 9-1 before securing a first set 25-12 win.
The second set saw the Broncos hold an early lead but the Tigers were able to keep it together and came back to capture the second set 25-21. Not wanting to see this match extended and seeing the frustrations of the Bronco players, the Tigers quickly closed out the third set 25-15, winning the series 2-0 with a game 2 sweep.
