Wolves add forward Stephen Shields to recruiting mix

The Lakehead Thunderwolves have turned to the volleyball court to add depth to their forward corps.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves have turned to the volleyball court to add depth to their forward corps.

Lakehead men’s basketball coach Scott Morrison on Thursday announced the team has landed 6-foot-7 Stephen Shields, who spent two seasons playing volleyball with the Brandon Bobcats from 2008 to 2010 and most recently played hoops for Assiniboine College in 2012.

Shileds was an all-Manitoba basketball star in high school, who Morrison says should play an important role with the Thunderwolves.
“Stephen will be an excellent fit with our team and we are excited to add him to our front-court group,” Morrison said in a release.

Shields, who arrives with two years of eligibility left, said he chose Lakehead because it’s a school where winning is the most important thing.

“They have proven that Lakehead is going to be a contender on the national stage and I would be given the best opportunity to not only win, but also develop on and off the court,” Shields said.
