It was an impressive runner-up finish for the Lakehead Thunderwolves at a weekend cross-country event in Eau Claire, Wisc.

Freshman Dylan Brown and sophomore Dominque Aulagnon finished second and ninth respectively in the eight-kilometre event, leading the Wolves team to second place in the 17-team event.

Brown finished the course in 25:18 while Aulagnon clocked in at 25:39 in what proved to be a tight race. Rookie Kevin Tree continued the LU race to the top, finishing in 18th spot, while captain Chris Brown wound up 47th in the 300-man field.

The Lakehead women weren’t quite as successful, but still ended up in seventh spot at the Blugold Invitational.

Danielle Thiel led the team, placing 17th in a field of 250 in the six-kilometre race in a time of 22:39.

Teammate Callie Roelfsema was the second LU athlete to cross the line, finishing 34th in a time of 23:06.

Lakehead’s Lisa Alaimo was 50th and Hilary Quirion wound up 125th.  Freshman Elora Beitz finished off the scoring for the team, coming in 179th.

Coach Kip Sigsworth was encouraged by the results.

“It was a great place to start the season,” Sigsworth said in a release.

"I was happy with the overall team placing, especially considering that we can still run better. On the women’s side Danielle and Callie made huge improvements over last year and the team is looking solid through four runners, we really need to close gap to our fifth runner.  The men looked good.  I am excited to see what they can do this season.”

The cross-country team’s next race is Saturday in Minneapolis at the Roy Griak Invitational.
