THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Thunderwolves will get a tough test this week as they look to build momentum towards a playoff push.
The Thunderwolves (2-10-4), mired in the cellar of the 10-team OUA West Division with a lowly eight points, host the defending Queen’s Cup champion Guelph Gryphons at the Fort William Gardens for a non-conference series on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
The Gryphons, who also won bronze at the CIS National Championship last year, are second in the division with 20 points, stormed into the Christmas break with wins in eight of their last 10 contests.
Gryphons second-year netminder Andrew D’Agostini has been one of the top goalies in the conference, sporting the third-best goals against average and second-best save percentage.
The two teams met twice last season, splitting the pair in Thunder Bay. Lakehead prevailed 8-2 in the first meeting with the Gryphons responding with a 6-5 overtime win the next night.
Lakehead has an all-time record of 30-8-2 against the Guelph.
