Following in the footsteps of men’s coach Scott Morrison, Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball coach Jon Kreiner has turned south of the border for talent.

On Wednesday the team announced Grand Marais, Minn. pivot Essa Jacobsen as its latest recruit. Jacobsen, a six-foot post, fills a huge void, Kreiner said in a release.

“Essa is exactly what we need in the post: a strong, tough, physical player who is willing to put her body on the line for her teammates. Essa’s a team-first player and will improve our rebounding and post-defense.”

The latest Thunderwolves rookie was a three-time all-conference all-star playing for Cook County High School, is the school’s all-time leading shot-blocker and is the only player in CCHS history to score 1,000 points and collect 1,000 boards.

She’s also a two-time all-MCAC Northern Division first team player, who averaged 11 points and nine rebounds a game playing for Mesabi Range Technical College.

“I’m super excited with this opportunity I have to play in Thunder Bay. It has always been a dream of mine to play at the university level, Jacobsen said. “I am looking forward to playing with the Lakehead University Thunderwolves and getting to work on the court with my new teammates.”
