LONDON, Ont. – The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s volleyball team is in the win column for the first time this season.

Lakehead snapped a six-game losing slide, rallying for a five-set (18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13) over the Western Mustangs on Saturday night.

Senior leftside hitter Jen Casey led the Thunderwolves attack, finishing the match with 24 kills on 49 attempts. Fifth-year senior Jasmine Fox added 11 kills while committing only four errors on 28 attempts.

Setter Vanessa Masters recorded 49 assists in the winning effort.

Lakehead got off to a sloppy start early, dropping five of the first six points to open the first set. Western led 16-9 at the technical timeout and held on with ease the rest of the way, aided by Lakehead’s nine first-set errors.

The second set was closer, but Lakehead could not find a way to pull even late. The two teams were even 13-13 before Western opened a 17-13 edge and remained at least two points clear of the Thunderwolves the rest of the way.

From there the Lakehead offence cleaned up, hitting only two errors in the third set to get back in the match.

A six-point run on the Kailin Robinson serve in the fourth set gave Lakehead an early fourth-set lead, where they held on to draw even.

The Thunderwolves closed out the evening with their first match point as Casey killed a Masters set.

Lakehead completes the three-game weekend series with a Sunday afternoon affair against the Brock Badgers.
