Mr. Alessandro Prete, age 78 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in the St. Joseph's Care Group, on Sunday, May 8, 2011 after a lengthy illness.
Alessandro was born on Jan. 30, 1933 in Laurignano, Cosenza, Italy, the youngest son of Giovanni and Saveria Prete. He grew up in Italy where he had become a successful young man.
In 1962 he gave up all that he had to follow his heart and meet up with the love of his life Gina Basilide in Canada. The two were married on Sept. 29, 1962, sharing 48 wonderful years together.
Alessandro never forgot his Italian heritage and its traditions, which he carried on in Canada. He enjoyed making return visits to Italy and he looked forward to making wine, sausages and olives just as he was taught as a young man in Italy, passing along the traditions to his children in the process.
Out of respect, he and Gina named their children after their parents.
Alessandro was a hard working man who was completely dedicated to building a good life for his family. He was meticulous and precise in any task he undertook. He found great pleasure in working in his garden, especially looking after his favorite plant. Having come to Canada alone, Gina's family and the family they started together were all that he had in his new home.
He cherished the Sunday meals he shared with his family and he especially loved the time he spent with his grandchildren who were his "Little Angels". Alessandro will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gina, children: Giovanni (Tammy), Giorgio (Stephanie), Saverio (Debbie), and Sandra (Johnny) Rioux; grandchildren: Michael, David, Savannah, Athena, Braedan, Briana and Avery Prete and Calvin, Alexis, Lucas and Lorenzo Rioux, sister Rosina Etillio Brogno, sister-in-law Immacolata (Salvatore) Miceli as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Giuseppe (1991), sisterAnna (Francesco) Perri, and father-in-law and mother-in-law Giorgio and Raffaella Basilide.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011, leaving the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, at 9:30 a.m. to St. Anthony's R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini.
The entombment will follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum. Visitation for friends will be held on Thursday, May 12th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel where the Vigil Service will begin at 7 p.m.
