It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred (Alf) H. Johnson peacefully at home with his family on Friday, February 4, 2022.

Alf was born on June 16, 1929, in Longlac, Ontario to parents Senja and Charles Johnson, brother to Violet and Margaret. He was raised in Longlac and Nakina and was schooled later in Port Arthur. Alf trained as a heavy equipment mechanic which led to a teaching career at Westgate High School. Nearing the end of his career he spent fourteen hilarious summers with Captain Jack Gurney’s Geritol Crew on the Welcome Ship.

Alf was a lifetime member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, an incurable volunteer and a remarkable human being.

Alf is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eleanor (née Pedersen) and their four daughters: Beth Churchman (Fred), grandsons Matthew and Nicholas (Cait) and great grandson Odin; Pam Johnson and granddaughter Anneka; Judith Deschamps (Les), granddaughter Adrienne (Luke), grandson Collin (Jen) and great grandson Gus Alfred; Karen Chrenek (Evan) and grandsons Daniel and James (Shelby). He is also survived by his sisters Violet Alexander and Margaret Fredericks and their families; sisters-in-law Shirley LaForme and Florence Pedersen; and brothers-in-law Edward Pedersen (Jackie), Gordon Pedersen (Margaret) and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Uncle Bror, brothers-in-law Gerard LaForme, Raymond Pedersen, Eiler Pederson (Margaret), Don Fredericks and Alex Alexander.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jon Johnsen, nurse Michelle Mercier, the numerous Bayshore PSW’s, especially Darryl, Ankit, Push, William, Romeo and Brian, Safeway’s Arthur Street Pharmacy, Lori K at MJB Library and the numerous friends and family members who dropped by with meals and flowers.
Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, as per Alf’s wishes, donations may be made to Our Hearts at Home Cardiovascular Campaign (healthsciencesfoundation.ca) or to the Regional Cancer Center.
