It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Alfredo Coccimiglio, fondly called “Coach” by his friends and family, on May 14th, 2018, at St. Joseph’s Hospice. He is lovingly remembered by Lucia, his wife of 50 years, and his daughters, Rosa (Kevin) and Maryjane (Charles).

Alfredo was born in Aiello Calabro, Provincia Cosenza, Italy, On November 11th, 1940. He was the first son of five children born to Geniale and Rosina Coccimiglio. As a young man, Alfredo joined his father Geniale and uncle Ernesto in Thunder Bay to work in the bush camps in 1957. He forged his way in Canada with the help of his older sister, Ida, and her husband, Francesco. He worked many jobs, from New Ontario to the Great Lakes Paper, and also became a member of the Italian Cultural Society. He later became employed with Manitoba Pool as a grain handler for over 25 years. He loved spending time in the outdoors, and enjoyed hobbies such as hunting, gardening, and making homemade wine and sausages.

Sadly, in the last few years of his life, Alfredo became ill. He peacefully left this world surrounded by family at St. Joseph’s Hospice. Alfredo is survived by sister Ermelinda (Francesco) Fata, brother Emilio (Bianca) Coccimiglio, sister Carmela (Armando) Bernardo, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews here in Canada and in Italy. Alfredo was predeceased by his father, Geniale Coccimiglio, mother, Rosina Coccimiglio (Rino), brother-in-law, Francesco Bruni, and sister, Ida Bruni.

A special thank you to all the friends and family for their love and support, as well as to the dedicated healthcare professionals at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Care Group.
