ALPO K. KOIVURANTA

Mr. Alpo Kauko Koivuranta, age 82 years, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his loving family by his side.

Alpo was born on February 1, 1934 in Port Arthur and raised in Lappe, then moving to Port Arthur in 1959.

Being the youngest sibling and ill at a young age shaped his life to be more scholarly than physical.  He was a voracious reader of real facts, politics, history and geography. He loved music, and played the mandolin and banjo.  He was a choir member and even did some acting.

Alpo worked at various truck driving jobs, Eatons Store and most recently at the LCBO main warehouse.  He had to retire from there in 1989 due to health issues.

Alpo is survived by nephew Dennis Koivuranta (Flora), nieces; Arlene Gailing (Gary) of Chemanius, BC, Nancy Serravalle (Tony) and Natalie Smith (Willy Kartinen) and their families.

Alpo is also survived by good friend and loving companion Aino Putkonen and her family.

He was predeceased by his parents Vesteri and Mariaana Koivuranta, brothers Elo and Aatus, sister Elli Schween and nephew Gerald Larson.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Pastor Jorma Tuomisto. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in the spring. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service and during the reception at Harbourview. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TBRHS Foundation, Thunder Bay Public Library or a charity of your choice.

We love you uncle “Alps”
