The family of Anne Woit sadly announce her passing on Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 at Pinewood Court. She had recently celebrated her 100th birthday on February 24th, with all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends at Pinewood where she had resided for the last several years.
Prior to this Anne had lived on Empire Avenue where she was looked on as an icon in the neigbourhood together with Marg Petrie, Vera Anderson and Mary Skrepichuk. Anne will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Judy (Tim), Barry (Marsha) Barrie, Ontario, and Ron (Barbara), 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sons, an infant at birth and Raymond (2014), her husband Peter (2012), her parents Helen and Wasyl Bobbie, and 7 brothers.
Mom was
born on February 24, 1918 in Sandy Lake, Manitoba which according to her was the best place in Canada. Her mother died when she was 3 years old leaving her to be raised by her father and 7 older brothers. Together they operated a successful wheat farm for many years which was eventually owned by her brothers and then her. Our mother knew how to plough the fields with horses, sow the seeds and harvest the crops. She said everyone on the farm had a job including all the animals. Anne left the family farm to move to the big city of Toronto where she became a nanny for a very prominent family. She was treated very well by this family and bragged about the number of shoes they bought for her. She later moved to Thunder Bay where she found work at Canada Car (Bombardier) as “Rosie of the North”. It was there she met the love of her life, Peter Woit and together they raised 4 children.
Anne worked at a number of jobs - a cook at Smitty’s Pancake House and Chippewa Park, a caterer for weddings and events at the Westfort Credit Union and the most rewarding job - a babysitter of her grandchildren. Anne had many talents, she excelled at cooking, baking, sewing, cribbage and gardening. Everyone enjoyed the family gatherings and dinners at her home on Empire Avenue.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 5th from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Blake Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 6th at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 766 Sprague Street with Mass at 11 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Rey Ronquillo. The family would like anyone attending the services to join them afterwards for lunch in the church basement. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers those who so desire may make a donation to the charity of their choice in memory of Anne. The family would like to thank the staff of Pinewood Court for the loving care of our mother through her years there.
Anne Woit will be remembered in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 9, 2019.
