It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arlindo Santos, peacefully at home with his family on Feb 5th, 2022.

Arlindo was born on Sep 5th, 1941 in Portugal. Arlindo emigrated to Canada as a young man and eventually found himself in Northwestern Ontario where he met the love of his life, Linda Ibey. They settled in Beardmore, On and eventually moved to Thunder Bay to provide more opportunity for their 2 sons. Arlindo worked as a mechanic at Domtar for 30 years before ill health forced an early retirement. Arlindo was happiest when spending time with his family. He could always be spotted in the stands cheering, first for his sons who played hockey and baseball and later for his granddaughter on the soccer field. Many in Current River will remember chatting with Arlindo on his many long walks through Boulevard, Centennial Park and the Cascades with various canine companions over the years. He loved to travel and created many memories travelling the world with family and friends. He was a selfless man who may have been the neighbour who mowed your lawn or shoveled your drive without seeking recognition. That’s who he was. He will be remembered for his positive energy, generous spirit and unwavering support for his family. The “old man construction crew” has lost a member.

Arlindo is survived by his wife, Linda (nee Ibey), sons Carl, Tony (Maria) and his greatest joy, granddaughter Madison (Devon Prontack). Sisters, Piedade Roberio, Montreal, Laurentina Marques, Portugal, Agripina (Jose) Silveria, Montreal, Brothers-in-law, Philip Ibey (Mary), Oshawa, John Ibey (Tammy), Marathon, Sister-in-law Carol Magee (Doug), Thunder Bay. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents Julia and Manuel, brothers Jose (Silva), Alfredo (Denise), Sisters Maria (Albano), Deulinda (Ambrosio), brother in law Alfredo, in-laws George and Florence Ibey and sister in law Diane.

Thank you to Arlindo’s nephews Joe, Ron and Todd for helping with the preparations to care for Arlindo at home. Thank you to niece Kelly for always being there with support and advice and to Lorraine for helping keep us fed. Arlindo cherished all the visits from dear family and friends during this difficult period.

Thank you to the ICU staff, Dr. King, Dr. George and to Tracey Robinson for their compassion and support. Special thanks to Palliative care nurses Liz, Sidney, Madison, Dr. Miller and to Amit, Para Med PSW, who displayed such gentleness with Arlindo. The caring and support provided by the Palliative team allowed Arlindo to spend his final months at home with his family.

Cremation has taken place and per Arlindo’s wishes, there will be no formal service. If friends and family wish, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be welcome.
