It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Mr. Armando Badanai after a lengthy illness on September 3, 2021 at the age of 85 years.

Born on March 25, 1936 in Cinto Camaggiore, Venezia, Italia to Marino and Rosalia Badanai, he was the second oldest of five children. Armando left school at an early age to work and help on the farm. In 1957, at the age of 21, he dared to venture to a new life in Canada, arriving in Fort William by ship. Throughout the 1960’s, Armando was an integral part of the legendary Italia Soccer Club. He would play into his mid 40’s. Awards for best defenseman and his team winning five championships in a row were a source of great pride. A love of soccer, hockey and fierce competition were instilled in both of his sons, particularly his colourful language on the field when a referee got it wrong. The ref just might need “a crock in the head”.

On April 11, 1964 Armando married Alli Wallin in Port Arthur, Ontario. They had three children who stayed close to their parents, all living in Thunder Bay.

Armando was employed by Kam Motors Ltd (Badanai Motors) for 43 years, retiring in 2001. He headed the paint shop there and rarely, if ever, missed a day of work. He passed his strong work ethic onto his children and grandchildren and a career to his son-in-law. He appreciated his camaraderie with his co-workers. Armando was a lifetime member of the DaVinci Centre. Many long friendships were formed over epic debates, tall tales and happy times over the years. Friends were important, but family for him was the core.

Armando was a generous man with Italian hospitality to spare. Gardening was a favourite past time. Well into his 70’s he not only tended to his own garden but the gardens of some friends and family. He was a true work horse – strong and untiring. Armando had other traditional passions including making wine, hunting and fishing. He was so very proud of each grandchild. He was their gracious chauffeur, bringing them to hockey and soccer, or to and from school. They will miss their Nono/Grandpa.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Alli, his daughter Paula Goldberg (Wayne), son Ron Badanai (Lori), and son Brian Badanai. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Erin Goldberg (Riley Nolan), Craig Goldberg (Megan), Anjelina, Isabella, Sophia and Joshua Badanai. Armando had two great- grand daughters Aubree and Autumn Goldberg who could make him smile and laugh out loud every time. Nieces and a nephew in Italy also survive.

Armando was predeceased by his parents and brothers: Luciano, Delio and Beppi and his only sister Anna Maria.

Cremation has taken place and a private funeral service will be held at the Blake Funeral Chapel. Should friends desire, memorial donations to the charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.

A special thank you to our neighbours on Lansing Street who showed care, friendship and assistance to Armando and Alli over the years. We also greatly appreciate the love and support of close friends and family, here and away, who never forgot Armando.

Dad, you are a father we looked up to, a role model and maybe, unbeknownst to others, a lamb rather than a lion. We love you. Rest in peace.

Armando, I will love you forever ~ Alli
