With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our loving mother, aunt, and yiayia (grandmother), Athina Morakis, aged 82 on Sunday May 31, 2015. After a short battle with cancer, she left us surrounded by her loving family at her side.

Athina was born December 12, 1932 in Chios, Greece. She immigrated to Canada in April 1956 from Myrina, Lemnos Greece. In September 1956, she returned to Lemnos where she married her late husband, Nicholas Morakis. They returned to Fort William in April 1960. She worked at McKellar Hospital and then alongside her husband for many years in the restaurant business.  

Athina was a great cook and baker. She, along with her husband, loved to entertain.  Athina was actively involved with the ladies’ Philoptohos Society of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church as a member and president for many years. Her Church and her faith were always important to her.

Athina is survived by her son Demetrios (Jim) Morakis, daughter in law, Danielle Levesque, grandchildren Helene, Nicolas and Alexandros Morakis and daughter Maria Morakis. She is also survived by her brother Kosta Papadakis of Lemnos, Greece as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Athina is predeceased by her husband Nicholas Morakis (1996), her mother Matrona, and father Dimitri, her sister Georgia is Lemnos, Greece and sister Ploumi in Thunder Bay.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the kind and highly professional care Athina received by:  Dr. B. Hartford & staff, Dr. K. Gehman, Dr. D. Vergidis, Cancer Clinic & staff at the TBRHSC 1A and also to all the staff on Hospice & Palliative Care Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5th, 2015 leaving the Harbourview Funeral Centre at 10:30 a.m. to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 651 Beverly Street, for the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. to be celebrated by Fr. Nikolaos Tambakis.

Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 pm. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, any donations can be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Memorial Fund or to a charity of their choice.
