August Cholin
The family of August (Gus/Albert) Cholin announce his unexpected passing on June 23 2021. Gus was born in Datteln, Germany on July 31 1944, the youngest son of Russian refugees, Anna and Roman Cholin. After WWII, the family had settled in Braunschweig, where he received his education and had started an apprecticeship in welding. He immigrated to Canada with his parents to join with his sisters who had immigrated earlier. On arrival in Canada he worked odd jobs until being offered a sheet metal apprenticeship which became his career until his retirement in 2000.

Soccer played a big part of his life. Growing up in Germany, he played for his home town. When he came to Canada, he continued playing with many local teams, mostly Juventus and United. He also coached many youth teams, and when his playing days were over, he stayed in contact with the game through refereeing. He watched every soccer game he could get on TV, and always cheered for his beloved 'Die Mannschaft', the German National team.

He would watch countless hours of any sport on TV, and he cheered his Chicago Blackhawks and the Toronto Blue Jays. He rejoiced in their victories, and scolded the coaches when they lost.

He was predeceased by his parents, precious daughter Natalie, brother and sister-in-law Mike and Hanni, sister Cathy Wheeler, sister and brother-in-law Mary and Paul Szczepanik, brother-in-law Mike Tabak, nephew Michael, brothers-in-law Brian and Glen Currie.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy (Currie), sons Patrick (Debra), Ian (Karen), Rick (Jackie), grandchildren Cael, Sophia, Heidi Flood, Jamie (Amanda) Flood, and great grandchildren Everly, Ben and Jaxson, sister Nina Tabak, brother Bill, In-Laws Nancy (Bruce) Allison, Robert (Ruth) Currie, Ellen (David) MacKenzie, Monika Currie, and many nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID restrictions, a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Diabetic Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or Broadway United Church would be appreciated.

The family would also like to thank the Thunder Bay Police Service for the dedication and compassion in helping us through this difficult time.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
