Barbara Sanderson

Our mom, Barb, passed away on January 29th, 2022, having dedicated all of her 78 years to her family and her community.

Mom was a teacher, librarian, sports fan, gardener, crafter, music, and arts lover. She was up for whatever adventure lay ahead, and always said yes to new experiences.

Married for 43 years to the love of her life, Jim, they travelled and explored together, while raising their family. Golfing, happy hours, endless nights playing cards and watching hockey with friends, or just sitting and chatting, mom was game. Summers were spent at the camp at West Floral Beach and on family road trips. The longest one was to Lewisville, Texas in 1978, where we lived for a year while dad went to school. After that trip, we were professionals at 48 hour drives, depending upon each other for fun.

This variety and willingness to try new things continued all her life, especially in the last 9 years with her grandsons Matthew and Henry. Her world revolved around them. Taking them to school, babysitting, week long sleepovers at camp catching minnows and swimming, snowshoeing and sliding, and year round picnics regardless of the weather. Family dinners, sewing them sleep sacks and neck warmers, everything she did was an expression of love. The three of them had their own routines, agreements, and secrets. She was the ultimate Nana.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Jim, son-in-law Edward Hoshizaki, and parents Joan and Al Fenske. Left to grieve are our families: Paul, Matthew, and Henry Shewfelt, Allane and Bob Lindstrom, Carole Sanderson, Diane and George Sanderson, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and the extended family of lifelong friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Lot 66 on South Court Street, on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 12:00 Noon. Capacity is limited to 60 guests and proof of vaccination must be provided. If you wish to attend, please call the funeral home at (807) 346-9880.

For those unable to attend in person, the service will be streamed live and then archived at www.harbourviewfuneral.ca where condolences may be offered as well.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation - Northern Cancer Fund, or Roots to Harvest.

Mom gave us the best life imaginable. She was strong, loving, and generous. We can’t image our lives without her. Our hearts break to say goodbye.

Love you Love you mom.
Kathy and Shelly
