Mrs. Barbara Thompson, age 77 years, passed away at her residence on Friday, March 20, 2015.

Barb was born in Grenville, Quebec on May 27, 1937 to Guy and Gladys Young.  She came with her family to Red Rock in 1947 and in 1954 she married Ted Hawkins with whom she had their daughter Lesli.  In 1966 she and Lesli moved to Thunder Bay where she began working as a bookkeeper at Knudsen Painting and Decorating, proudly working with three generations of Knudsens right up until her passing.  Barb was very involved in sports, enjoying curling, baseball and the most important to her, bowling.  It was through bowling that she met Dick Thompson and they were married in 1969.

Barb was a big part of the bowling community as a bowler, league executive, and association member involved at local, provincial and national levels and was well known across the country for her dedication and hard work.  She was a longtime and active member of Knox United Church Pruden Street.

She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her daughter Lesli (Hank) Schelling, grandchildren Chris (Tasha Hogan) and Dylan Schelling, mother Gladys Young, sisters Helen (Ollie Imhoff) Roy and Linda (Carl) Sodergren, sisters-in-law Marilyn Young, Gladys Laskowski and Alice Thompson as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.  She was predeceased by her husband Dick Thompson (2009), father Guy Young, brother Gladwin Young, sisters Joan McDonald and Wendy Turner and niece Sherilee Sodergren.

Barb’s family and extended family meant the world to her, and always looked forward to any gathering.  She was an avid reader, enjoyed the daily crossword and cryptoquote puzzles, loved taking pictures, did not care for new technology, and still believed in the art of sending handwritten thank you notes.

After Dick passed, Barb encountered one medical challenge after another, and she dealt with each one as best she could.  Through it all, she remained loving, caring, stubborn, compassionate, but always positive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. Joyce Fergus-Moore presiding.

ollowing a reception the interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  As expressions of sympathy memorials to the Northwestern Ontario 5 Pin Bowling Association or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.  On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
