Kostka Bernadette new

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bernadette (Betty) Kostka at the Bethammi Care Centre after a brief illness.

She is survived by her older sister Teresa (Terry) Zack, her loving and devoted daughter Mary Jo, son-in-law Stan Danko, grandsons Matthew and Adam, as well as two sons in the U.S., Michael Kostka, James (Kindra) Kostka, and grandchildren Demi Jo and Parker. She is also survived by numerous other relatives and close family friends.  She was predeceased by her parents Teresa and Joseph, her brother Louis (1998), and her sisters Florence (2007) and Margaret (2014).

Bernadette was born in Fort William and taught at St. Jude’s school for many years until her retirement in 1988.  Her Catholic faith was of utmost importance to her.  If you had Mrs. Kostka as a teacher, you graduated from her grade knowing your prayers, your math facts, and how to print correctly.  Bernadette enjoyed watching hockey and following her favourite team the Toronto Maple Leafs. She rarely missed a game on TV, especially if the Leafs were playing.

For the past three years, Bernadette was a resident of Bethammi Care Centre where she endeared herself to the staff in unique ways.  Their love, care and compassion is truly appreciated. Our heartfelt thanks for the extra support and expertise provided by the staff in helping us to navigate her end of life journey.

Special thanks to Father Blazek, Myrtle who brought Communion every week, and to Father Dan and Father Maurizio of St. Dominic’s Parish who continued to support Mom after she moved to Bethammi. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Dominic’s Church, celebrated by Rev. Marurizio Maifredi c.s.  Interment will follow at St. Andrews Cemetery. If friends desire, memorials to the St. Joseph’s Foundation - Bethammi Nursing Home would be appreciated.
