Christine Baxter

Peacefully, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and family, Christine (Christina) Baxter passed away on the afternoon of April 19, 2022.

Christine Waboose was born on Howells Lake on May 5, 1942 to Daniel and Sophia Waboose, their family traditional territory of Miminiska, on the Albany River.

Christine is survived by her former husband, Bob Baxter and their beloved children: Mary Lou, Peggy, Flora (Vernon), Eddy/Rob, and Larry; she was Mama to grandchildren: Renee, Keisha, Joey, Joshua, Vanessa, Jamie-Lee, Terra-Lynn, Sofia-Jan, Tessa, Malcolm, Cole, Brittany, Brayden, Brandon, Kayla and McKenna; great-grandchildren: Ella, Gerard, Evie-Lynn, Levi, Haylee, Erynn, Bowen, Elijah and Noah; she will be missed by siblings: Elijah and Felicia Waboose, Margaret Sagutch, Irene Waboose, and Ernie and Nora Waboose; as well as a large extended family of in-laws, nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by parents Daniel and Sophia Waboose; and siblings Isaac Waboose, Annie Waboose, Andrew Waboose, Walter Waboose and Ida Waboose.

Christine was a well known and respected lady by so many. In her career as a Native Language teacher, she worked with children for 35 years in Fort Hope, Nakina/Geraldton and Thunder Bay. She remained busy in her retirement, and would provide teachings on traditional skills and cooking to many young students at Old Fort William. She had an entrepreneurial spirit, using her talents in blueberry picking, cooking, baking and sewing to earn extra money and was famous for her pizzas, blueberry baskets, jams, and slippers.

Christine was strong and independent, and thought nothing of travelling across the country to visit daughter Flora and her family in the Yukon. She loved watching the Young and Restless and the Toronto Maple Leafs on television. She enjoyed Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, but loved nothing more than to pick up the phone to catch up. She spent many evenings at the Bingo where she would play and catch up with family and friends.

Christine had a positive “Never Give Up” attitude, and beat cancer in August 2008. She carried with her a deep faith, and provided support and friendship to so many, always with smiles, kindness and warm energy. She will be deeply missed by many.

A Service will be held at the Harbourview Funeral Centre on Friday, April 22nd at 4:00 pm, with visitation to begin one hour prior. She will be laid to rest at the Sunset Memorial Garden on Saturday, April 23rd at 11:00 am.
