It is with heavy hearts that the family of Cornelius Nate announce his unexpected passing on Saturday, April 14, 2018 in Eabametoong First Nation. Cornelius was born in Grace Lake on February 12, 1935 to Edward and Mary Nate. The eldest son, he was raised on the family’s traditional territory in Miminiska, hunting, trapping and commercial fishing with his father and brothers. In 1955, he married the love of his life Mary Jane Waboose, and together, they raised their family, first in Miminiska, later moving to Fort Hope (Eabametoong).

Cornelius worked for the Ministry of Transportation managing the airport operations, until his retirement. He then began on his next career as businessman and politician. In the late 1980’s, he opened a small store, Corny’s Variety in Fort Hope. He eventually expanding the store to offer groceries, gas, general goods, postal and banking services. Corny also served as Chief of Eabametoong First Nation for many years, and remained committed to working for the people of Eabametoong and the Matawa area.

Corny was well-known throughout Northern Ontario through his work and his business dealings. His funny, kind and generous nature will be missed by many. He was always willing to stop and have a conversation, making sure to ask about your family, and throwing in some humor, through his stories. His love for the land remained, as he and Mary Jane spent time at their cabin at Petawanga every chance they got, to hunt and fish and enjoy the land. A devoted father, his children will remember his teachings and spiritual guidance that will be carried on for the next generations.
