<p> Dr. Darlene Marilyn Steven, passed away in the Thunder Bay Reginal Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 after a lengthy illness.&nbsp;</p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Darlene was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on Feb.18, 1949 and attended Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, Manitoba before graduating as a Registered Nurse from St. Boniface School of Nursing and Receiving her Diploma, Public Health Nursing from the University of Manitoba.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">In 1977 she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from Lakehead University and later received her Master&rsquo;s in Health Services Administration and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Alberta. Darlene began her teaching career in 1988 as an Assistant Professor at the Lakehead University School of Nursing, becoming a Full Professor in 2001.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">She truly enjoyed being a teacher and cherished the interaction with her students.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Darlene was very dedicated to her profession, serving in various different capacities on numerous boards including as Chair of the Status of Women Committee OCUFA, Chair of the Hearts for Life Committee, Chair, Responsibility, Committee, Community Nurses Ontario Nurses&rsquo; Association, Chair, Northwestern Ontario Breast Screening Program Advisory Committee and Board of Directors of the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Darlene&rsquo;s dedication to the fight against cancer and to Cardiac Care was a driving force in Northwestern Ontario receiving much needed equipment including the Mobile Breast Screening Unit.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Her service to her profession, her community and to her students saw her receive various accolades including the Contribution to Teaching Award, the Margaret Page Award and the Distinguished Instructor Award from Lakehead University, Certificates of Merit form both the Northwestern Ontario Breast Screening Program and Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation as well as the Health Innovation Award from the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. and Lakehead University.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Darlene truly enjoyed life in Thunder Bay, especially the time spent at her home on Lake Superior.&nbsp; She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her spouse Dr. Sabah Mansour.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 when family and friends will gather in Our Lady of Loretto R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 11 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Francis Pudicherry.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Nurses Foundation or the Dr. Darlene Steven Bursary in Nursing at Lakehead University would be appreciated.&nbsp; </span></p> <p> <span style="font-size: 12px;">Arrangements are in care of the Sargent &amp; Son Funeral Directors, 21 N.
