Posted

The family of David Ginter sorrowfully announce the passing of their husband, dad and papa on Friday, April 1, 2011 in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Dad was born in Horndean, Manitoba to Isaac and Margaret Ginter on Nov. 17, 1926. Dad grew up in the prairies during the depression and had many recollections that he shared about the challenges of those times.

Dad travelled to Fort William in his early '20s and met the amazing woman who he would share the rest of his life with. Mom was from Springhill, Nova Scotia so east met west and the rest is history.

Dad worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a Brakeman and Conductor. Dad cut a dashing figure in his uniform and he was so proud to wear it. Dad was an avid sports man and hunter. He enjoyed countless seasons of curling at the Fort William Curling Club, where he was a long time member.

He also enjoyed many years as a member of the Elk's Lodge. During the summer he loved the occasional game of golf. Dad could be counted on to down a moose every year and together with Mom's garden, us kids had a tremendously healthy diet. Dad also enjoyed travelling to Portage La Prairie, Manitoba to shoot geese and duck with his brothers.

In his later years, Dad spent summers with Mom at various camping resorts most recently at Last Resort on Whitefish Lake. Mom and Dad loved to fish. Mom and Dad also took great pleasure in hitting the road with their motor home journeying to Florida, Maine and Nova Scotia to see Mom's family.

But it was their trip to Alaska that Dad talked about the most.

Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years Kathleen (Kay) and his four children Colleen (Paul), Brent (Mary Lynn), Jeff (Marsha) and Derrick (Julie). Left with wonderful memories are his grandchildren Genevieve (Jordan), Cole, Cassie, Sean, Kurt, DJ (Jenel), Katie (Ben), Shenoa, Matthew (Angie), Kayla and Carleen. Papa also had 3 great grandchildren Zack, Miel and Chariah. Dad is also survived by sisters Alvena (Tom), Chris (Henry) and Evelyn; brother Ed (Rita) and special sisters-in-law Hazel and Janice as well as many nieces, nephews and Sears-in-laws.

Predeceased by his parents, brothers Corney, Ike and John, sisters Mary, Margaret and Alice.

The family wishes to thank all of Dad's caregivers during the last year of his life. You made our lives much easier, content in the knowledge that he was being cared for.

A Celebration of David's Life will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 11:00AM in Broadway United Church with the Rev. Scott Gale officiating. Private Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery.
