Derek Hainey

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father and grandfather Derek Patrick Hainey at the age of 79. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday April 12, 2022 at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with his family by his side.

Derek was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on June 8, 1942 to Mary and Patrick Hainey, he was the youngest of seven children. Derek married the love of his life Elizabeth McLauchlan on October 27, 1967, and together they started their family before immigrating to Canada in 1972. They made Thunder Bay their home for 12 years before returning back to Scotland with their three daughters, only to return to Canada 5 years later. Although leaving his homeland he always remained a proud Scotsman.

Derek became an auto electrician at a young age and worked at numerous places before opening his own business Superior Alternator, where he stayed until retirement. He was a very athletic man throughout his years, having run in many marathons, and was a dedicated soccer player in both Scotland and Canada. He played for numerous soccer teams including the under 18 Scotland team in 1959. Once he retired from the game he stayed involved by coaching his grandchildren. Anyone that was close to Derek knew how much he loved his hometown soccer team Hibernian, and he always wore his green and white with pride.

Derek is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Elizabeth (Libby), his three daughters Jacqueline (Scotland), Lynn Villeneuve (Jason) and Pauline Hainey, as well as his three precious grandchildren Alyssa & Braydon Villeneuve and Adelynn Ferguson. Also survived by numerous relatives and great friends both in Canada and Scotland. Predeceased by his parents Mary and Patrick Hainey, his brothers Sam, Johnny, Martin and Tommy Hainey, and sisters Isabelle Stevenson and Anne Chapeskie.

We would like to thank the Thunder Bay Regional Emergency department staff and the nurses and PSW’s on 2B for their care and compassion through this difficult time.

Please feel free to wear your favorite soccer jersey in support of Derek, also think of a favorite memory you may want to share.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the heart and stroke foundation or the charity of your choice.

A celebration of Derek’s Life will take place on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Harbourview Funeral Centre. Visitation will take place one hour prior to service time starting at 10:00 a.m.

You are loved and missed everyday xx
