Dorothy Eileen Greaves of Thunder Bay, passed away unexpectedly at Roseview Manor May 31, 2018. Dorothy grew up in Matlock, England. As a young nurse she met her future husband, Joe Greaves stationed in England with the Canadian Forestry Corps. With hundreds of war brides, Dorothy sailed to Canada arriving by train to Port Arthur, January 1947.

Throughout her life, Dorothy was a strong willed determined independent woman. She had an uncanny very British quick wit which surprised everyone up to her last days. Dorothy was an avid gardener, enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, cribbage, curling and golf. She loved her home, never looked for luxuries or believed something should be replaced if not broken. She always looked forward to visits from grand and great grandchildren.

Dorothy lived in her own home until recently. During her short stay at Roseview Manor she loved to tease the staff. She complained they kept bringing her food, and that she would get fat. She loved to walk in the garden and so appreciated her own place in the dining room. It meant so much to her that everyone knew her name and what she wanted for breakfast. She was impressed with the cleanliness and complained she had to keep her shoes on, or fall on the shiny floors.

Dorothy will be missed by daughter Elaine Greaves; sons Bernie and Jim (Deena); daughter-in-law Susan Greaves; grandchildren Don Abbott (Dawn), Rick Goodwin (Susan), Keri Greaves (Susy), Kevin Greaves (Jennifer), Jennifer Love (Ryan), Christine Greaves; great grandchildren, Dalton, Ryley, Kyle, Dylan, Olivia, Oscar, Mathew, Nathan; sister Sheliah Wilde, Matlock England, sister-in-law Barbara Gustafson (Tom) and numerous family members and friends in Thunder Bay and across Canada.

She was predeceased by parents Francis and Dorothy Benson, brothers Frank and Eric, husband Joe Greaves, son John Greaves and grandson Adam Goodwin.

The family has honored Dorothy’s wishes for cremations and a private family gathering will be held at a later date.

Thank you to staff at Thunder Bay Regional 2B, Hogarth Transitional Unit, Roseview Manor for your great care and support for mom in recent months. Thank you Donna and Mary from Bayshore Home Care for years of nursing and personal support to assist mom at home. Thank you to all the Meals on Wheels volunteers for bringing daily meals to mom and for making those phone calls when something did not seem right. It takes a village to raise a child and it takes a village to help an elder to remain at home.
