It is with heavy hearts that the family of Dorothy Emily Bellis, age 94 years, announces her passing on August 13, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Thunder Bay with family by her side. Dorothy, unfortunately, had a fall the week prior that resulted in a brain injury. She fought each day to hold onto life.
Dorothy was born December 14, 1930, in Osaquan, Ontario and spent her childhood in South Gillies. She then moved to Thunder Bay to attend the RNA nursing program. Here she married Vic Cashaback, where they raised their 3 children, Carol, Bruce and Donna.
After moving to Toronto to receive her RN designation, she eventually settled in Haida Gwaii, where she met and married Ted Bellis. Together, they operated the Bellis Lodge that Ted had established, hosting unique guests from around the world who travelled to experience all the adventures this magical island has to offer. Many lifelong relationships were initiated from these visits. She expressed numerous times that these were some of the happiest times of her life.
After Ted’s passing, Dorothy moved back to Thunder Bay to be near her children and grandchildren, hosting many family gatherings. These retirement years spent in Lappe allowed her to enjoy her country living roots, including long walks with her dogs. Her love of nature was a defining characteristic and testament to her gentle spirit. This was evident in her expert gardening knowledge, love of animals and consistent donations to various wildlife organizations. Dorothy was grateful and cherished the travelling she was able to experience with Eco-Tours. These tours included numerous destinations in 6 of our continents.
The last few years living at Glacier Ridge were a perfect fit for Dorothy. The socialization and activities were engaging, and much to the surprise of others, she would break out in dance, often by herself, at musical events or if any music was within earshot. She was known by the residents as the lady who was always happy, always smiling, and almost always dancing. Dorothy loved life!
Dorothy is survived by her son Bruce Cashaback (Jackie), her daughter Donna Nishimura-Cashaback (Mark), step-son Danny Bellis (Janette), grandchildren Michael (Charlene), Tayler (Derrick), Wanda (Quentin), Dorothy (David), Carly (Daniel), Bryson (Makayla), as well as 6 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her parents, John and Clara O’Neil, loving husband Ted Bellis, daughter Carol Falk, step-daughter Lynn Bellis, son-in-law Henry Falk and first husband Vic Cashaback.
The family would like to express appreciation to the staff at Glacier Ridge for assisting Dorothy throughout her stay. Also, thank you to the SNEMS paramedics, the TBRHSC Emergency Department, 2B staff, as well as the wonderful staff of the hospice unit at St. Joseph's Hospital. A very special thank you to Caralyn from Paramed for the dedication and optimal care she provided throughout Dorothy’s time at the retirement home.
There will be a private family gathering at a later date.
Dorothy would love it if you could plant something and/or just hug your loved ones, human and pets. Or if desired, donations to the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society or the Canadian Wildlife Federation would be appreciated.
