Dorothy May McKenzie

Mrs. Dorothy May McKenzie (nee Poster), age 85 years, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph's Hospice on Monday, January 31, 2022.

Dorothy was born on June 4, 1936 in Atikokan, Ontario. The family later moved to Geraldton before Dorothy moved to Thunder Bay with her friend Edith Campbell, at the age of sixteen. This is where she met the love of her life, Gordon McKenzie. They were married on April 30, 1955 and Dorothy became a devoted housewife and mother of three sons. She was a true hockey mom and was probably the loudest one in the rink, cheering on her boys. After her sons had grown, Dorothy worked for James Murphy Fuel Oil and was a homemaker for the elderly. Following retirement, Gordon and Dorothy bought a small home in Arizona, spending 22 winters there.

Dorothy was a devoted Christian and her faith in Christ was very important to her. She loved the Lord and it showed in each aspect of her life. She also had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir for years. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy is survived by her three sons, Vern (Jeanette), Terry and Steve (Marie) McKenzie; four grandchildren, Shawn and Matthew McKenzie, Sheena (Matt) Winger and Stephen (Jessica) McKenzie as well as her great-granddaughter Jasmine McKenzie. She is also survived by her brothers Gary (Gwen), Neil (Bonnie) and David (Rachel) Poster as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and other relatives.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gordon (2020); her parents, Mabel (nee Aubey) and Mike Poster (Dmetro Pushter); brothers Raymond, Ted, Arnold, Bobby, Richard, Johny, Ronald and Donald Poster; sisters Margaret Jonas, Sophie Albert and Joanie Poster; mother-in-law and father-in-law Allison and Evelyn MacKenzie; brother-in-law Donald McKenzie and sister-in-law Darlene Safronyk as well as other relatives.

Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Dorothy McKenzie will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 11:00am in Evangel Church (1260 Balmoral Street) officiated by Pastor Jamie Nelder, followed by a committal service and interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.

As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, COVID protocols are still being applied in group settings. Capacity is limited to allow for social distancing of 6 feet, a record of attendance must be maintained and wearing of masks or face coverings by everyone is mandatory for those attending the services.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the DaVinci Centre (340 Waterloo Street South) in the Marco Polo Room following the graveside service. There will be a hot lunch, followed by an open mic and a time of fellowship and reception. Note: Proof of double vaccination will be required to enter the Hall.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of Dorothy to Operation Smile would be greatly appreciated.
