With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Douglas James Kenna on May 23rd, 2023.
Doug was born on January 24th, 1963, in Nipigon, ON, the third child of Mabel and John. He was diagnosed with Down Syndrome shortly after his birth, a time when little was known and understood about the condition. However, our parents were determined to give him the best life possible and were blessed to meet a doctor who encouraged them to take him home and love him.
Growing up in Nipigon, Doug lived with his parents and siblings Tasha, Greg, and Colleen. Affectionately known as Booie, Doug was a beacon of positivity, with a friendly and sociable personality. He had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh, make jokes, and have fun.
In 1968, parents of children with special needs in the Nipigon-Red Rock area, including our own parents, became passionate advocates for their children's right to access education. Their efforts led to the founding of the Nipigon-Red Rock District Association of Community Living. Thanks to the association's work, a government-funded school for children with special needs was established. Initially, the school operated from the basement of a church in Nipigon in 1969. Later it was relocated to a new facility that opened in 1973, The Hal Frank School in Red Rock. Doug, who was one of the first students, loved attending school, made many friends, and remained a dedicated student at Hal Frank until 1985.
Music held a special place in Doug's heart. He found joy in listening to a wide range of genres. Doug’s musical talents extended to playing the piano, spoons, guitar, and dancing. Some of his favorite artists included Johnny Cash, Anne Murray, John Denver, The Irish Rovers, The Eagles, and John Kenna.
Participating in activities brought happiness to Doug. Bowling, painting, swimming, card games, bingo, birthday parties, and celebrating every holiday were sources of great joy to him. Additionally, Doug had an extensive list of favorite TV shows including: The Partridge Family, Dallas, The Waltons, Cheers, Family Feud, and The Price is Right. He enthusiastically cheered on every game show contestant to win the prizes.
Doug’s affection for animals was reciprocated through the special bond he shared with them. Attending church services was a cherished experience for Doug. With his sweet smile, he had a unique way of spreading kindness to everyone he met. He loved to give the peace sign as a symbol of goodwill.
Doug had many happy memories of family trips over the years. He proved to be a resilient adventurer, surviving a week-long rainy tenting trip with his sisters and nieces. As well as biking, boating, and hunting adventures with his brother. Although, the family camp at Firehill Lake was his absolute favourite place.
In 2000, Doug, Mom, and Dad moved to Thunder Bay. Over the years, Doug provided unwavering support to our parents, who relied on him more than he ever knew. He retired from those responsibilities in 2018 when he moved into 2N Lavender at Hogarth Riverview Manor. He loved his new "apartment," made new friends, and was thrilled to have Mom and Dad nearby. Doug's love and devotion to our parents continued until their passing, and we are grateful for the comfort he provided them in their final years.
Doug’s family meant everything to him, and he loved them with all his heart. His beloved siblings, Greg (Helen) Kenna and Colleen Kenna (Jim Foley) will deeply miss him. Doug was a devoted uncle to his nieces and nephews: Cali Sutton (Ben), Tess (Matt) Legacy, Brodie Kenna (Harley), Brandy Kenna (Lisa), and Jasmine Foley (Allan). He also adored his great-nieces and great-nephews: Mya, Lynden, Kayden, Emma, Finn, Griffin, Kira, and Cooper.
Besides his immediate family, Velvet Kenna held a special place in Doug’s heart. His aunts, Hazel Nylund, Mary Fletcher, Carmel Delong, and Phyllis Kenna were cherished by him. His many cousins, including Debbie Nylund and Pam (John) Findley, also held a dear place in his heart. Marge Yarocky (Rich), affectionately known as Auntie Marge, was a beloved presence in his life.
Doug's family served as his foundation of love and support throughout his life, and he deeply appreciated their presence. He would have wanted to express his deep gratitude to all of them for being an important part of his life.
Doug has been reunited with his beloved family members who have gone before him. It brings us great comfort to know that he is now with our mother, Mabel (Oct 2019); our father, John (Oct 2020); our sister, Tasha Sutton (Nov 2022); our brother-in-law, James (Andy) Anderson (Apr 2021); and our brother-in-law, Robert Sutton. He is also reunited with our grandparents Elma Pakka and Vic Heino, Waino Pakka, James and Irene Kenna, our family friend Jim Yarocky affectionately known as Uncle Jim, and other family members.
