Elizabeth Chomniak

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Chomniak, age 89, on Thursday, March 4, 2021.

Born and raised in Ethelbert, Manitoba, she was the daughter of Nick and Dora Kuby. She attended business college in Dauphin, Manitoba and then joined the Bank of Montreal, where she enjoyed a long career. She moved to Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay), upon her marriage to Nick Chomniak in 1953. After retirement, Betty and Nick became two of the original tenants of the Millenium Home. Betty enjoyed gardening and travel, and dog Freckles, and was an active volunteer with MEMO, the Thunder Bay and Current River Food Banks, and the Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church and Catholic Women’s League. She maintained her independence right to the end. She was to have celebrated her 90th birthday on June 7.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Karen Chomniak (Paul Gamsby) of Peterborough, Ontario and his family; brother Victor (Liz) Kuby, Ethelbert, Manitoba; brother-in-law Oles (Jackie) Chomniak, Thunder Bay; sister-in-law Doris Blahut, Mississauga, Ontario; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Nick, parents, sister Mary (Vern), brothers Mike (Helen), and John (Dorothy), and in-laws Walter, Jennie, and Morris.

Due to current restrictions, a celebration of Betty’s life will take place at a later date or to coincide with what would have been her 90th birthday. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to MEMO, Thunder Bay Food Bank, Current River Food Bank, or Our Lady of Loretto Roman Catholic Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Sargent and Son Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
