Ellen Kareno

Ellen Kareno, age 93 years, passed away in hospital on June 27, 2021, with husband Olavi Harja at her side. Ellen was born on August 14, 1927 in Saarijarvi, Finland to parents Matti and Anna Savela. She immigrated to Canada with her first husband Niilo in 1953. For 30 years they operated Bay Jewelers, a successful watch repair and jewelery shop in the heart of Port Arthur’s Finnish community. Ellen developed a keen interest in jewelery, especially Finnish designs.

The summer camp at Surprise Lake was a favourite place to relax with friends, enjoy nature, and tend her flowers. Through her life Ellen demonstrated a very resilient and positive spirit. She enjoyed travelling south for the winter to Florida, and in later years to Arizona. She and Olavi shared many happy years living the life of snowbirds.
Ellen was a long-time member of Hilldale Lutheran Church and the Ladies of Kaleva.

Lovingly remembered by husband Olavi Harja and relatives in the U.S. and Finland. Predeceased by her parents, husband Niilo, sister Sanni and brother Esko.

Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel of  Harbourview Funeral Centre on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jari Lahtinen officiating. Interment will follow in Lappe Cemetery.
