Emilio De Benetti

Born in Meduna di Livenza, Italy, Emilio was the second child in a family of nine children.  In 1950, he immigrated to Canada in search of a better life.  He settled in Fort William and a year later, Emilio met and married Giovanna (Tersia) Fabbio.  Together they had four children: David (Kate) and grandchildren Kyle and Emily, Richard (Patricia), Gerald (Sharon) and grandchildren Dana, Linnea and Elliott, and Janice and grandchildren Jessica and Brittney.  He was also the beloved great grandfather of Jaxson (Jake) and Penelope.

Owner of Emilio’s Barbershop and Hair Salon for over 60 years, he was well known in the community and took great pride in cutting hair for generations of families.  A lively conversationalist, he enjoyed political discourse with all who would participate, holding court at the barber shop.

Emilio was adept in a wide variety of interests; an exceptional Italian cook and gardener, an avid hunter and fisherman (lake and fly), an accomplished golfer, and bridge player.  He also enjoyed hosting poker nights with his chums that included everyone from mill workers and teachers to priests and politicians.  In later years, he became an accomplished wood carver and sculptor, painter, and artist.  His happiest times were spent enjoying life at the camp that he built on White Fish Lake.

Predeceased by his wife Tersia in 1978.  He lived his 94 years to the fullest with gusto, and always on his own terms right up to the end.  He passed peacefully with his family by his side.  Emilio is survived by Nello and Gianna De Benetti, Mario De Benetti, and family in Italy.

Many thanks to Thunder Bay Regional Hospital and to all who saw him through his passing.  Special thanks to the staff of 2C, especially Dr. Ward, Dr. Miller and Dr. Hindy, Alisha, and Robert.  Their compassion and skill were more than we can ever repay.

With love, he will remain in our hearts and minds never to be forgotten by all who knew him.  He made Canada a better place.
