Mr. Esko Heiskanen, age 88 years, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2017, in Bethammi Nursing Home.

Esko was born in Heinavesi, Finland on October 2, 1928, to Yrjo & Hanna Heiskanen, the middle child of three.  He immigrated to Alberta, Canada in 1960.  Kaisa followed him in 1961 when they got married, before eventually settling in Port Arthur in 1965.  Esko worked a variety of jobs.  In 1993, after 25 years working in the lab at Great Lakes Paper, he retired.  He was an avid outdoorsman, happiest when fishing or hunting.  Esko and Kaisa spent their free time at their Rudge Lake and Kashabowie Lake camps.  They wintered in Florida, taking cruises and enjoying retirement until his ill health limited their travel.  He also enjoyed watching his granddaughters grow up and was immensely proud of their accomplishments.

Esko is survived by his wife Kaisa, sons Paul (Tarja) and Perry, grandchildren Aliisa and Helena, and other relatives in Canada, Finland and the U.S.  He was predeceased by his parents, brother, and sister.

Thank you to the wonderful staff of Bethammi Nursing Home for making his last six months so comfortable.

Funeral Services for Mr. Heiskanen will take place on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, presided by Rev. Jari Lahtinen.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service time.  Interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens will follow the reception.
