Mrs. Eva Lawer, on the eve of 95 years, passed away peacefully at Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged on Sunday, March 14, 2021.

A resident of Thunder Bay for 71 years, Eva was born in Ukraine on May 12, 1926. She immigrated to Canada with her husband George (Jourko) and their daughter Kim in 1950 and began their life together as young entrepreneurs owning and operating residential real estate while continuing to grow their beautiful family. Sincerely kind, talented and intelligent, Eva was spunky with a magnetic personality. She was a social butterfly with a great sense of humour and the natural ability to make a stranger feel welcome. She instilled the importance of kindness, integrity and hard work in all of her four children. Her exceptionally close bond with her children not only made her a wonderful parent but their best friend. This remarkable love and bond with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren is her greatest legacy.

In her sunset years Eva enjoyed volunteering at her Church, The Church of Holy Protection, making pierogi with all the dedicated Babas who took pride in supporting their community. Eva especially enjoyed summers at Birch Beach with her family since 1966 where everlasting memories were made and shall continue to live on. She is loved and missed beyond any words.

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful healthcare and recreational therapy teams at Pioneer Ridge, with very special thanks to all of the caregivers who work on Plaza 4 for their exemplary care of Eva.

Eva is survived by her children: Kim Nania Stockwell (Richard), Anna Lawer Mareno (Frank), Deb Bissonnette (Dan), and Winston Lawer; grandchildren: Kara Nania, Ryan Alexeev (Sergei), John Nania (Eni), Kristin Mareno Koehlmoos (Kolby), Nikki Mareno Escarra (Greg), and Alyx Cannon Shaw (Courtney); great grandchildren: Anastasia and Alexander Alexeev, James Escarra, and Kora Koehlmoos.

She was predeceased by her mother, father, sisters and brothers in Ukraine, husband of over 50 years George Lawer, son-in-law John Nania and her sweet, precious great-granddaughter Annabelle Eve Escarra.

A private interment service was held on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. If friends desire, donations in memory of Eva would be welcomed to the Thunder Bay District Humane Society or any other local animal rescue. Online condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
