The family sadly announces the passing of Gary Barabash on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the TBRHSC following a brief but very courageous battle with cancer.

Gary was born in Port Arthur, Ontario to Walter and Genevieve Barabash. He is survived by his wife Karen and daughter Nicole Latour. Also surviving is daughter Shelley Scott. Gary leaves behind his mother, Genevieve Barabash, sisters: Shirley Cole; Bonnie Speed (David); Joanne MacKenzie; Jane DeLuca (Sam); and brother Alan (Heidi).  Many nieces and nephews also survive. Gary was predeceased by his father Walter, sister Judy Calcott, and brothers-in-law Ted Cole and David Calcott.

Gary began his working life at the elevators in Thunder Bay, moving on to Dryden to work in the paper mill. In 1981, he returned to Thunder Bay where he was employed by Provincial Papers until he retired.

Gary was an avid reader and enjoyed his daily crosswords. Being a devoted baseball fan, he never missed a St. Louis Cardinals game. In recent years, he served on the Board of Directors for  Apple Credit Union. Gary had a compassion for animals which was evident through the care he provided to the family pets and the wildlife that visited the yard. He always had a pair of binoculars ready to watch the various birds that frequented the feeders.

Cremation has taken place and friends of Gary and the family are invited to a “Come-and-Go” Visitation at the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. to share memories and say good-bye.

Should friends and family so desire, donations to the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
