The family is saddened to announce the passing of George Bachmaier. George passed away peacefully through the night in his residence at Hogarth Riverview Manor on Monday, July 4, 2022.

George was born in Dachau, Germany on April 8, 1930 to Josef and Elisabeth Bachmaier. He is the youngest of 9 children and leaves behind 1 sister, Heidi.

George left Germany and came to Canada in 1951 where he met his wife, Gladys Harshey, at a restaurant where she worked. She then nursed him back to health following a short illness and their life together began. George and Gladys married on November 30, 1953. They had 6 children together and raised their family in Thunder Bay, Winnipeg and British Columbia. Gladys passed away in April 2008. George was then alone until he met his current partner, Jean (Jeanie) Savitsky in 2010. George and Jeanie spent the past 12 years filling each other's lives with joy and purpose.

George worked many careers throughout his lifetime. He was a Diesel Mechanic and Shop Foreman, and finished his working career with the Municipality of Surrey, BC. George enjoyed a lengthy retirement. He loved sailing in BC and being on the boat. George was incredibly artistic and creative, and enjoyed pottery, painting, drawing, woodwork, and working on cars. He could manufacture or fix almost anything. Family members all have keepsakes of George's, whether it's wooden spoon sets, cutting boards, cotter pins, paintings or drawings. Little pieces of George can be found everywhere.

He was predeceased by his wife Gladys; son William Bachmaier and daughter Elizabeth Matson; son-in-law Willy Skinn and daughter-in-law Connie McBride.

George is survived and remembered by his partner, Jeanie Savitsky; children Linda Bachmaier, Heidi Skinn, John Bachmaier, and Angie Lau (Joe); son-in-law Melvin Matson; sister Heidi Donabedian as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even some great-great-grandchildren.

Many thanks go out to the fantastic staff at both St. Joseph's Hospital site and Hogarth Riverview Manor for the fantastic care George received over the past year.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for the end of August, 2022. Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of George to the Northern Cancer Fund (payable to TBRHSF) or the Alzheimer Society would be greatly appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.
