“The Lord is my Shepherd…”

On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, George Ian Brown was called home to be with his Lord and Saviour. At the age of 74, Ian passed peacefully at home with family by his side after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Ian was born in 1948 to parents John and Mary Brown. He grew up in Westfort where he attended Francis Street School, Heath Park School, and Westgate CVI High School.

Ian attended Lakehead University graduating in 1971 with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. In 1974 Ian started his career at Confederation College where he obtained his teaching Master. He was the Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Technology and Pre-Technology programs for many years. Teaching was a big part of Ian’s life, and he was well respected by his colleagues and students.

Ian married his high school sweetheart Hilkka and they were married for over 51 years. Ian’s family was always very important to him. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren; they brought him great joy.

Ian was an avid hunter and fisherman; he looked forward to summers and enjoyed camping and sharing his passion for fishing with his children. In Ian’s spare time he enjoyed listening to music, country dancing, playing cards with friends and spending time with family. Ian spent many hours volunteering at church, including cooking for numerous events, assisting with the teen group and summers at Camp Aurora.

Ian is survived by his loving and devoted wife Hilkka, children Christine (Ben) Wolf, Steven (Sheila) Brown, Michele (John Paul) Caputo, grandchildren Ella and Evan Brown, brother Ronnie Brown, sisters-in-law Aila (Gerry) Buckrell, Elsie (Jim) Read, Rita Mattila (Kal Chepil), brother-in-law Paul Stuart, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Ian was predeceased by his parents John and Mary Brown, sister Katherine Stuart and in-laws Jaakko Mattila, Taimi Mattila-Romonas, Frank Romonas, and Leena and Dave Cressman. Ian’s passing has left an enormous void in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be missed by all.

We would like to thank all of those who cared and supported Ian especially in his final days, making his wish to remain at home possible.

In accordance with Ian’s wish, cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 47 Walkover Street, Thunder Bay with Rev. Brian Falkenholt presiding.

If so desired, donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.

“…and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”
