It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Mr. Gilio Scarcello age 88 years, he passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 1, 2018 in the TBRHSC, with his family by his side. 

Gilio was born on February 1, 1930 in Pedace Cosenza, Italy to Pasquale and Antonietta. Gilio lived in Italy until he immigrated to Port Arthur in 1954 in hopes of making a better life. Here he met and married the love of his life, Irma Nicoletti in 1962 and together they raised two sons Tony and David.

Gilio had various jobs until his permanent employment with the city of Port Arthur/ Thunder Bay where he worked in the sewer and water department until his retirement in 1990. Hereafter Gilio became a proud grandfather to his amazing grandchildren Nicholas and Alia, which were the joy of his life.

In his retirement years Gilio became an avid gardener and always shared the fruit of his labour with everyone he knew. Gilio enjoyed making wine and homemade “Sopressata” and was very proud of his specialty “Panzarella”

Gilio was always the happiest when entertaining family and friends. He had a great sense of humour and always the life of the “festicciola”. He was a member of the Italian society of Port Arthur and St. Anthony’s Church. 

Gilio will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 56 years Irma. His sons Tony (Teresa) and David. His grandchildren Nicholas and Alia. He leaves behind his sister Rita in Italy with numerous nieces and nehpews in Thunder Bay, Southern Ontario and Italy who fondly referred to him as “uncle scarch”.

Gilio was predeceased by his parents Pasquale and Antonietta along with his brothers and sisters, his father and mother in law Guytano and Erminia Nicoletti as well as brother in laws, sister in laws, a niece and nephew. 

Funeral Mass for Gilio Scarcello will take place on Wednesday June 6, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St Anthony’s Church, 123 Hilldale Road and celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini. Visitation will be held at Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street on Tuesday June 5, 2018 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m, with prayers at 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the TBRHSC or a charity of your choice.
