It is with deep regret that the family of Giovanni (John) Niccoli announce his passing on Saturday, May 26, 2018, age 88, surrounded by family at the TBRHSC. Giovanni was born in Grimaldi, Italy on March 9, 1930. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 as his dream was to build a better life for his family.
He bega
n to pursue his passion as a barber, later opening John Niccoli’s Barber Shop where he spent the next 58 years until his retirement in 2013. A talented musician and skilled accordion player, he led the Southern Melodies band for 28 years at many celebrations, socials and weddings. His love of music was also shared by teaching private lessons. All the while raising a family of five together with Filomena, the love of his life of 65 years. On any given evening, he could be found spending time with his family or playing cards with his friends at the Italian Cultural Centre. When not occupied by his family, Giovanni was an avid sports fan. He was a dedicated Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan, but above all he was passionate about soccer. In Italy, he achieved semi-professional soccer player status, a Torino supporter since 1947 and was involved with the local soccer association. Giovanni was a member of the Italian Cultural Society of Port Arthur, DaVinci Centre and St. Anthony’s Church. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and caring Nonno. He will always be remembered for his big heart, thoughtfulness, honesty and generosity. 

Giovanni is survived by his loving wife, Filomena; children: Peter (Lisa), Frank, Lina (Dominic), Paul, and Luigi (Wendy); grandchildren: Giovanni, Sarah, John, Rosalina and Nicole; and great grandson Michael, as well as many relatives and close friends in both Canada, US and Italy. He will be reunited with his parents, Peter and Adelina; siblings: Giuseppe, Pasqualina, Paolo, Luigi, Teresina, Serafina, and grandson Michael. He was also predeceased by numerous in laws, relatives and close friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 when family and friends will gather in St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church (123 Hilldale Road) for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with the Vigil Service beginning at 7 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street.
