The family is sad to announce the passing of Gwen McLeod. Gwen passed away peacefully on June 7, 2022 in St. Joe’s with her son and daughter at her side. She was 90 and lived in her own house until her last 2 ½ weeks.

She was born in Truro, Nova Scotia in 1932 to Bernard and Gleta Marr. After her dad’s passing when she was 8, she moved to Fort William with her mother. Gwen married Ken McLeod in 1953. They were together for 54 years until his passing in 2007. They went on numerous trips to Hawaii, Barbados, Florida, Mexico and drove coast to coast in Canada. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling, swimming, baking, volunteering, and camping and spending time with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Gwen beat breast and cervical cancer from 1990, along with many other health issues and surgeries since. She had a great sense of humour, right up to the end.

Gwen will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Marilyn Garton and her husband Terry and her son Don McLeod and his wife Jane. Grandchildren Kelly Garton (Autumn, Ashlyn, and Noah), Kristy Papineau and her husband Derek (Hudson, Linden, and Nolan), Brad McLeod and his girlfriend Taylor Vance and Megan McLeod. Gwen was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ken and her great grandson Tristan Garton.

Gwen’s family would like to thank Dr. Brian Hartford and Patti for all their years of special care, Dr. De Bakker and the nursing staff at St. Joe’s for their compassionate care in mom’s final days, Rexall Pharmacy, all her PSWs from VON, Michael at Harbourview Funeral Centre, and Margaret and Jenn.

There will be a celebration of life on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Slovak Solarium for family and friends. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Heart & Stroke or the Northern Cancer Fund.
