It is with heavy hearts the family of Heikki Laakso announce his unexpected passing on December 28, 2021 at the age of 85.
Heikki was born on April 1, 1936 in Kauhajoki, Finland and immigrated to Canada in 1957. He met Irma in Port Arthur in 1958 and they married in 1960. He worked in the bush camps in his early years and then mainly in construction and carpentry throughout his career. Heikki lived a simple life with his family and close friends. He spent summers at Warnica Lake family camp enjoying BBQ’s and saunas. Heikki spent a lot of time with his good friend and brother in-law Arvo. Heikki’s passion for life was his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Irma of 61 years, daughter Susan (Doug), grandchildren Daniel (Carly), Cayla (Nikos), great grandchildren Kai, Everly, Niila, Arya and Zaak, numerous relatives in Finland and sister in-law and brother in-laws in Thunder Bay. He was predeceased by his parents Iisak and Anni Laakso, brothers Mikko, Matti, Hannu and son Jimmy.
A family celebration of life for Heikki will be held at a later date. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at TBRHSC for your compassion and care of Heikki.
