Helen Jung passed away peacefully on Fri. Feb. 5th, 2010 with family by her side. She was born Helen Wong in Winnipeg on Nov. 11, 1921 to parents Wong Fook Toy and Chan See, and grew up the eldest of five children in the small Manitoba community of Elm Creek. Helen married Jack Jung in 1941 and moved to Fort William. They owned a fruit market on Syndicate Avenue, then corner stores on Banning and Cumberland Streets. Helen also worked at Mount McKay Feed for several years. She traveled frequently with her sisters, brother and their families to such places as Hong Kong, Florida and Branson. Family members relished her Chinese cooking. Always sociable and selfless, Helen left her mark on so many people’s lives. But most importantly, she was a treasured mother, PoPo and sister. Helen is lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Diane Chin of Toronto, Sharon Arkell (Peter) and Marilyn Porter (Jack) of Thunder Bay. She will forever be PoPo to Carrie Chin, Darryl Lee (Sandy) and James Lee of Toronto, Kate Porter (Jack Hamilton) and Annie Carey (Brandon) of Ottawa, and Jane Porter of Jyväskylä, Finland, and great-grandmother to Mason Lee. Helen was cherished by her sisters Megan Lee, Pearl Lee and Yvonne Chow and numerous other relatives. She was a special "mom" to "The Gang" and their spouses. Her cat Tabitha misses her greatly. Helen was predeceased by her husband Jack, brother Jim Wong and son-in-law Gil Chin. A celebration of Helen’s life will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thurs. Feb. 11, 2010 at Sargent and Son Reception Centre. Words of tribute will begin at 11:45 a.m. Please honour Helen by donating to the charity of your choice.
