The family of Helen (Helli) Irene Laine sadly announces the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother at Bethammi Nursing Home on Saturday, March 18 at the age of 95 following a lengthy illness.

Helen was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on February 29, 1928 to Mary and Eino Johnson. Helen spent a happy childhood on the Johnson (Wainionpaa) family farm in Kivikoski and attended Kivikoski Public School SS#1.

During her working years, she was employed with Eatons, Wilmott-Siddall and People’s Coop. Mom was also involved in several organizations over the years – Five Mile Home and School Association, Thunder Bay Neighbourhood Watch, Ladies of Kaleva, and the Thunder Bay Finnish-Canadian Historical Society. She was a member of Lappe Lutheran Church.

Mom was happiest hosting friends and family in her own home over the years where laughter rang out and great stories were told. She always made sure there was plenty of food and refreshments for her guests.

Helen will be sadly missed by her three sons, Bryan (Marcella) in Vancouver, Gary in Thunder Bay and Howard in Calgary. Also survived by grandsons Matthew (Daisy) and Jordan (Lisa) and four great grandchildren. Numerous other relatives also survive. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Edwin, husband Tauno, and daughter-in-law Denise.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the 3rd floor of Bethammi Nursing Home for their compassionate and professional care in Mom’s final years.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, March 24, 2023 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre presided by Pastor Sirpa Tolppanen. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. The service will be live-streamed and archived at www.harbourviewfuneral.ca where condolences may be offered as well. Interment in Riverside Cemetery will follow the reception.

Should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers donations may be made in Helen’s memory to the Alzheimer Society or the charity of your choice.
