Posted

Mr. Ian Spence, age 61 years, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
Ian was born in Fredericton, NB on March 20, 1949 to Kathleen and Bill Spence. He graduated from University of New Brunswick with a degree in Geology and worked for various companies until he moved to Thunder Bay and began his own geological exploration business.  Ian was a wonderful man whose sense of humour, kindness and consideration endeared him to all he met.  He was a friend to everyone. His love of the Canadian wilderness was exceeded only by that of his family.
Ian met Martha (Marty) while in Thunder Bay and they were married in 1979. "His girl" and the two branches of the Spence tree; his sons Bryon and Colin, were his greatest joys.
Ian is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Martha; sons Bryon (Melissa Wayne) and Colin; sisters Heather Laschinger of London, Ontario and Barbara (Doug) Hall of Trail, British Columbia; parents-in-law Ken and Margie Benson; sisters-in-law Marianne Murphy and Amy (David) Marek. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. He was predeceased by his parents.
A Celebration of Ian's Life will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley St. at Algoma where friends are asked to come and share a memory.
The family would like to formally thank Dr. Paul Watson, the staff of the Home Hemo Dialysis, the Renal Dialysis Centre and those of  Ward 2A for the care and compassion shown Ian.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Ian to Diabetes Health Thunder Bay or Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre - Renal Unit would be appreciated.
