Jack Laughton

The family of Jack Kenneth Laughton are sad to announce his passing at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Wed. April 13, 2022.

Jack was born Sept. 12, 1933 in Fort William, Ontario to parents Maude and Ken. After attending a number of schools, he left early to start working for the Canada Grain Commission as part of the weighing staff and rose to the position of weigh master before retiring. Jack was admired for his hard work ethic, his fairness and his advocacy for better working conditions for his crew.

He met his soulmate, Lois ‘Bobbie’ Reynard, at a dance in 1950 and they were married on Sept. 2, 1955, spending 65 happy years of marriage together. They had 3 sons and both worked hard to provide them with a good life. They supported their kids through all of their various creative and athletic pursuits. After their retirement, they purchased a camp at Clover Beach. Bobbie would cook up a storm for the family while Jack worked on the upkeep of the camp and yard. Even though that kept him busy, he always made time to swim with the grandkids and ride the waves of Lake Superior.

An avid baseball fan, Jack played for the Fort William Red Sox in his younger years. He rooted for the Boston Red Sox until the Toronto Blue Jays were formed. From the comfort of his home, he became their armchair manager - Go Jays Go!

As a self-proclaimed handyman, Jack renovated many family houses with the knowledge he gained from his father-in-law. He wasn’t considered kitchen-literate, but became a master at making pizza-sized pancakes. He loved to play chess and trivial pursuit with family and friends. Jack was a dedicated member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and was a supporter of many local charities, including The Underground Gym.

The family would like to express our thanks to Sierra, Ivy, Francis and staff from St. Joseph’s Care Group for their wonderful support in caring for Jack at home. We would also like to thank the caring staff of the I.C.U. at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital for making his passing a peaceful one.

He is survived by sons David (Vicki), Bill (Jasia) and Bruce, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his brother Jim (Margie), sister Jane Philp (George), sister-in-law Lorraine Hatley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was pre-deceased by his wife Lois ‘Bobbie’ Laughton, parents Maude and Kenneth, parents-in law Jean and Fred Reynard and brother-in law Bill Hatley.

Funeral services will be run by Jenkens Funeral Home and held at Harbourview Funeral Centre, at 499 Cumberland St. N. at 11:00am on the morning of Thurs. April 21st.

Rest in peace, Jack. You are now with Bobbie, the love of your life.
