With broken hearts, the family announces the passing of James Robert Gilmore, a beloved husband, Dad, Papa and great-Papa. Jim passed away at TBRHSC on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

His career began in the oil industry, employed by James Murphy Coal and later Imperial Oil. He was transferred to Toronto and resided there with his wife Vivian for the next four years. The two returned to Thunder Bay and Jim retired from the company after having put in 25 years. While not truly retired, he continued to work at Tom McDonald Fuels, later, Pye Brothers Fuels, well into his 70’s when he finally retired for good.

Jim’s passion was gardening. He had the brightest, most beautiful flowers and the biggest, tastiest vegetables that his friends and family had always delighted over. He shared his vegetables with pride and happiness to neighbours and family who enjoyed his bounty year after year.

Family meant everything to Jim and his granddaughter Jaime was his pride and joy. He spent countless hours with her in her childhood into her adulthood as they had a unique bond. There was no love like the one that they had for one another. He entertained her every request and she doted on him until the time of his death.

Jim went on many family adventures, travelling in the RV and making so many cherished memories, too many to even count.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Cuthbert and Ann Gilmore (Liddicoat), sisters Hazel Bucknam and Violet Van Ginkle.

Left to pick up the pieces are his loving wife Vivian (Gilmore), his daughter Nancy, son-in-law Michael (Calonego), his cherished granddaughter Jaime, husband John (Christen) and precious great grandchildren Lincoln, Scarlett and Mikie. Also missing him are Papa’s dogs Stewart and Alvin and great grand dogs Pipina and Topenga. Many other relatives also survive.

The family thanks Dr. Shack, Dr. Ramshandar and Dr. Chan for their excellent care, compassion and support throughout Jim’s life.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Harbourview Funeral Centre at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jonathan Blanchard officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service time. A private family interment will follow.
