It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Janis Elaine Henry on November 10, 2023, at the age of 64. After a long battle with melanoma cancer she passed away peacefully with family by her side. She was strong, thoughtful, funny, and kind, and will be forever missed and loved.
Janis was born in Fort William, Ontario and attended Churchill High School. In her younger years she played slow pitch for numerous teams across Thunder Bay and was a stand out player. She spent many years employed in retail and truly loved her job as a cashier. Notably, she made many friends and memories during her time working at Zeller’s, Dollarama, and McFrugal’s. Janis really enjoyed shopping at the local second hand stores in her spare time. She was very proud of her ceramic Christmas tree collection and it’s probably the biggest in the city! She also enjoyed bike riding, reading autobiographies, and spending time with family and friends.
Her pride and joy was her daughter, Jana, and grandson, Jay. They were her world and road trips to Minneapolis were so special. Becoming a mother and grandma was such a bright light in her life and she was so loving and caring. Her sister, Vicki, was her rock and they shared a deep bond. They shared many laughs and spent so much time together. Her dear friends Carol, Cathy, and Carol brought her so much companionship and comfort over the years.
Janis is survived by her husband, David Henry. Her daughter, Jana O’Neill and son in law, Jordan O’Neill. Her grandson, Jay O’Neill. Her parents; Wayne Foster, Jayne Wark, Marion Ball, and Gary Ball. Her sister, Vicki Thorne, and brother-in-law, Gary Thorne. Her niece, Kelly Thorne (Mitch). Her nephew, Turner Thorne, and his son Logan Thorne. Her friends Carol Simpson, Cathy Paul, and Carol Murphy. Her brother and sister-in-law Doug Henry (Mel, Carly, Kim, Kelsey) and Sheila Smith (Doug). She is predeceased by her sister, Susan Flagel. Her grandparents Robert and Wilma Hutchison and Harry and Gwen Foster. Her mother and father-in-law, Edna and Donald Henry. Her sister-in-law, Susan Galvin.
The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to all the caring staff at TBRHSC and St. Joseph's Care Group. Dr. Chan, Dr. Bezanson, Dr.Anthes, Dr. Slivchak, and Susie Hamilton were pillars in her care and we are so grateful for all the compassion and care you showed Janis throughout her journey. As per Janis’ wishes, no service will be held. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Center would be greatly appreciated.
