With deepest sorrow the family of John Chan, would like to announce his passing on Tuesday, October 17th 2017, at 1:30 in the morning with family by his side.

John was born in Taisan, China and came to Canada in the early 1950's with his godmother Suzanne Chong.

He attended school in Kingston and then moved to Fort William, Ontario to join his grandfather Yip, he was later joined by his god parents Arthur and Suzanne Chong. He was a long time business owner and resident of Thunder Bay, he truly loved this city and the people. He ran many businesses first the log cabin then Chong gardens and finally Chai’s. His last business venture was when he moved to Fort Francis, Ontario and ran the Red Dog Inn. When it was time to retire he came home to Thunder Bay.

John leaves behind the love of his life, wife Chai, son Robert, daughter Millie (Ian), son Johnny (Mariela), and grandchildren Noah and Marisa who nicknamed her grandpa “fancy lips”. He also leaves behind brothers Thomas(Fong), Allan (Donna), Alfie (Sue), sisters Jeanny (Bob), Kin (Poon Wan), and Winnie (David), Susie (late Rory), and Lilly (Colin) as well as numerous nephews and nieces on both his side and Chai’s side. He also leaves behind several brothers in law and sisters in law. He was predeceased by son Daniel, parents Yin Ying Chan and Yip Kam Young, godmother Suzanne Chong, god father Arthur Chong, sister in law Kim Chiu , and brothers Four and Stephen.

John was an extrovert and very social person and we would like to thank the multitude of life long friends who he deeply treasured and added incredible joy to his life. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in the Chapel of Sargent and Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Harold Hunt presiding.
